Jean RimJean Rim is a Korean American artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Drawing inspiration from organic layering of patterns found in nature such as the scales of a fish or Fibonacci spirals, and her mother’s traditional pearl-inlaid lacquerware furniture known as najeonchilgi (나전칠기), she carefully whittles stratums of enamel underpaint. Each of Rim’s kaleidoscopic bursts of color, often metallic and light-shifting, emerge and recede on the wooden canvas in a hypnotic rhythm that recalls the movement of natural elements in their truest forms.
